How to Style Your Home for Summer: A Warm-Weather Refresh

Summer home styling means swapping heavy winter textiles for lighter, breathable ones: linen, cotton, jute and terracotta, in a warmer, sun-bleached palette of cream, sand, sage and soft coral. Done well, a home feels cooler, calmer and a little more relaxed for the longest months of the year.

Swap heavy textiles for breathable ones: Pack away wool throws, velvet cushions and flannel sheets. Replace them with washed linen, lightweight cotton and waffle weaves in cream, oatmeal and sand. The room looks (and feels) several degrees cooler, and lighter fabrics catch summer light beautifully.

Lighten the palette by one or two tones: You don't need a full repaint, just a shift in the accents. Trade rust, burgundy and forest green for sun-bleached coral, sage, soft terracotta and warm white. Keep your base neutrals and let two or three brighter cushions or a vase carry the seasonal mood.

Layer in natural fibres underfoot: Roll up plush wool rugs and swap in jute, sisal or a flatweave kilim for the summer months. Natural-fibre rugs are cooler underfoot, hide sandy footprints from the garden, and visually open the room. Store the wool rug rolled in a breathable cotton bag, not plastic.

Bring the garden inside: A single bundle of olive branches in a tall vase, dried pampas in a stoneware urn, or a low bowl of wildflowers does more than any decor object. Forage what's in season, whether that's eucalyptus, lavender, wheat or hydrangea, and refresh the water every two days for fresh stems.
