How to Layer Bedding for a Hotel-Quality Bed at Home

Layered bedding means building a bed in distinct fabric layers: fitted sheet, flat sheet, duvet, a blanket or throw, and a stack of pillows. Done properly it gives a calm, hotel-quality look that still feels like your own bed rather than a showroom.

Start with a smooth, well-fitted base: A fitted sheet that is the right depth for your mattress is the difference between a tidy bed and a wrinkled one. Smooth it tight from the centre outwards. If you use a mattress topper, tuck the fitted sheet over both so there's no gap or ridge underneath.

Add a flat sheet in a tonal colour: A flat sheet (one shade lighter or darker than the fitted sheet) creates the first visual layer. Fold the top edge back over the duvet by about 25–30 cm so it shows as a clean band of colour at the top of the bed.

Choose the right duvet weight for the season: A 4.5–7 tog duvet is right for spring and summer; 10.5–13.5 tog is the sweet spot for autumn and winter. A natural-fibre cover (washed linen or cotton percale) drapes more beautifully than synthetic and only gets softer with each wash.

Layer a throw at the foot of the bed: Fold a throw in thirds lengthwise and lay it across the bottom third of the bed. This single move adds texture, warmth and visual weight that grounds the whole composition. Choose a throw with a different texture from the duvet: waffle, chunky knit or wool.
